Ne’er cast a clout ’til May be out,
The ancient words decree,
But the May that it refers to
Is blossom on a tree.
Hawthorn blossom known as May
Will tell us when it’s right
To forego winter clothing
For something that is light.
This year the blossom didn’t come
Until the end of May
And sure enough a heat wave
Came the self same day.
So disregard the forecasters,
And don’t go by the date,
Keep wearing winter woollies
When the May blossom is late.
And when you see a snowstorm
Of blossom on the trees,
Get out your shorts and T shirts
And liberate your knees!
