RSS Feed

Shaun asked me if I could add an RSS feed to this area. I have managed to do it so that you can point your favourite reader at http://c-n-u.org.uk/node/931/rss.xml but I cannot see how to add an icon to the page too.

That shouldn’t matter though, give the feed path a whirl and feedback.

Information Architecture

How much do we really need to know about IM as a ‘pure’ subject? Does it actually add any value for the customer using SharePoint? Or are my colleagues right to look at me like I’m bonkers when I bang on about it?

Good Set of Videos on 2010

I found these videos on SharePoint 2010 through the Partner Learning site Ignite training.

Not sure what log in you’ll need, if any; though it seems you can just play them now I’ve tried it.

There are over two days of videos to watch so don’t try to watch them all at once! 🙂 The first three are grouped together in the Parther Learning as a two hour Overview. As I work through them I’ll add to this.

Robocopy as a SharePoint Recovery Tool!

I am currently tracking a red flag issue at one of our customers.

The customer has been trying to use a team site like file store. Moving files and folders around as a workflow using Explorer View. As the system was only at SP1 it hit a little known bug of running out of document IDs, which apparently change each time a document is moved in explorer view. This then led, somehow, to a corruption of the Document Library so that its contents could not be exported using STSADM.

The issue has been escalated to Microsoft and is in the hands of a Microsoft ‘SharePoint Escalation Engineer’. The solution appears to be to map the doclib to a drive letter in WebDAV and Robocopy the documents out of it to file store. This is then Robocopied into a new doclib in a new site on a staging Farm by means of the same WebDAV mechanism. The Escalation Engineer has hacked together some code to extract the permissions in the source Farm into an XML file and then apply them to the target Farm. I believe that just to make things even more complex the source and target Farms are in different AD domains.

I have lots of doubts about this process, so lets discuss! 🙂

The Three Techieteers

This is an area for me and my Techie buddies, now scattered across three companies and two continents.

Guys, I’ve had to change how you can add Content to this area.

1) To add new content to the root of the Techieteers area you must click on ‘Create content’ on the left first.
2) Next select by ‘Techie entry’, ‘Blog entry’ or ‘Forum topic’.
3) When the entry form opens enter your title and body text.
4) Before you preview or save it expand the ‘Book outline’ section of the form and verify ‘The Three Techieteers’ from the ‘Book’ drop list is selected. Do so if it isn’! Otherwise your entry will not be secured against public eyes.
